While metallic fillings are very durable and hard wearing, white fillings are now also resilient with the bonus of being tooth coloured so they blend in with your natural tooth.

Benefits include:

  • Restore functionality of a tooth
  • Fillings that look like teeth

What are white fillings?

Poor oral hygiene can lead to a build-up of plaque which can then lead to tooth decay.

Why do I need a filling?

If decay is left untreated, the nerve of the tooth may become infected and vulnerable to infection. So to prevent this, a filling will be recommended to clean out the decay and seal the tooth from harmful bacteria.

What does it involve?

  • You may be numbed for the filling so it makes it comfortable for you.
  • The cavity will be drilled and cleaned out. You will feel lots of vibrations and have water in your mouth which the nurse assistant will remove for you.
  • Once, clean, the dentist will clean the tooth further with an etching gel, then a bonding agent is applied which si set with a curing light.
  • The composite filling will be layered into the cavity to build it up into its original shape.

White Fillings FAQs

White composite fillings get hardened by UV light so you can eat straight away although your dentist might recommend that you wait at least two hours before eating because your cheeks and gums might be a little numb from the anaesthetic.

Metallic amalgam fillings need more time to harden so it is recommended that you leave it at least 2 hours before eating.

Your dentist will formulate a treatment plan with you at your dental health check appointment so you will know how many fillings you require. Sometimes you may require more than one filling which can be all completed in a single visit.
To look after your filling you must brush twice a day, ideally with an electric toothbrush, accompanied with daily flowing or interdental cleaning. Make sure you have a low sugar diet and visit the dentist and hygienist at regular intervals. If you have a lot of fillings it may be necessary to have 3 monthly visits to make sure the mouth remains stable.
