What are veneers?

Dental veneers are a thin layer of porcelain or ceramic covering the front surface of the teeth.

The layer of material that covers your teeth will sit flush with your natural teeth so that they feel comfortable and look cosmetically pleasing. Veneers are cemented onto the teeth to last many years – providing you with a smile you feel fully happy and confident with.

What does it involve?

At your consultation appointment, we will discuss aspects of your teeth you wish to improve.

At the preparation appointment a thin layer of the tooth surface is shaved off to ensure the veneer can be placed over the remaining tooth surface precisely for a natural appearance Your dentist will guide you to picking the right shade for your new veneers and a digital scan of your teeth will be taken for the laboratory to make them

At the next appointment the veneers will be cemented in place and you will leave with a brand new smile.

Veneers FAQs

The dentist will inject a local anaesthetic into the gums surrounding the tooth they will be working on before they begin the procedure. This will completely numb the area, meaning that no pain will be felt. The preparation is minimally-invasive meaning only a thin layer of enamel from your teeth is removed.

To begin with like anything new, you might need a little time to get used to your veneers, but they shouldn’t affect your speech to any great degree. After a couple of days, you won’t even notice that you have veneers and any speech problems will go away over time.

Although porcelain cannot decay brushing the veneered teeth is still important. In addition to removing any staining materials from the front surface of the veneer, it is very important to maintain the health of the natural tooth to which it is fixed.

Adding flossing, or another form of inter-dental cleaning to your daily routine, will greatly increase your chances of avoiding gum disease.
To avoid detachment of your dental veneers, please avoid biting down in a manner that may cause them to ‘flick’ off. For example, biting fingernails or opening packets with your teeth.

Yes dental veneers are safe! The veneer itself, being made of porcelain, is biocompatible so patients never have to worry about having an allergic reaction. Dentists also use a special bonding agent that is safe for your teeth and overall health.
